Feb 01, 2024

The work of masons is all around you. From brick chimneys to stone siding, your local masonry company has added beauty to homes, professional buildings, and pathways. Masonry is an important field, so read here to learn more about the history of masonry techniques.

Origins

According to Britannica, the 4th century marked the dawn of masonry work. People in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt worked with mud bricks and stones to build their structures. One of the most famous structures to come out of ancient Egypt is the Great Pyramid. Ancient Greeks and Romans would later develop advanced methods of cutting, shaping, and joining stones with mortar. The ancient Greeks had two orders in their architecture called Doric and Ionic. According to the American School of Classical Studies, the Temple of Apollo at Corinth was built in the 6th century B.C. and it's a great example of the Doric style.

Middle Ages and Renaissance

As the Middle Ages came, masonry began to evolve further. Builders experimented with different materials, styles, and designs. During this time, some of the most famous Gothic cathedrals in Europe were built with the expertise of masons. The Taj Mahal in India and the Great Wall of China are stunning features that people come from around the world to see. In the Americas, the Incas and Aztecs built impressive stone monuments and temples. The Inca fortress of Sacsahuaman was built by between 20,000 and 30,000 people over a period of 70 years, according to Fertur Peru Travel, a travel agency. The largest pyramid in the Americas is still standing in Mexico.
